Outlier Media is seeking a photojournalist intern for Summer 2024. This position is an opportunity for a local undergraduate or graduate student to work in our Detroit newsroom from June 10-Aug. 30, 2024. Interns must be a student at a college or university in Michigan, although enrollment in the summer semester is not required. Interns must also have full access to a reliable car to complete photo assignments. The pay rate is $32 per hour for 30 hours per week.

The intern will receive guidance, direction and support from an award-winning photojournalist, who will serve as their mentor. The intern will also work with members of our editorial team to produce visual content within our coverage areas, which include housing, utilities, transportation, local government, policing, development, arts, culture and community.

We are open to applications from college students who want to focus on still photography and who have an interest in digital/social media, graphics design, and/or video.

Successful candidates will be creative, motivated, deadline-driven and inquisitive self-starters who bring ideas to the table that enhance Outlier’s storytelling with compelling visuals. We will be most interested in applicants who can find and pitch great stories and photo essays about Detroit residents and the issues that affect daily life in a big city. We want a multitasker who can juggle multiple assignments and write clear and accurate captions and alternative text. In return, this intern will receive a rewarding, real-world newsroom experience, build a robust portfolio and gain more skills to enhance their visual journalist toolbox.
