If you’re a striking auto worker, otherwise affected by the strike, or have general questions, text “STRIKE?” to 67485 and an Outlier journalist will investigate and send you the answer. What’s happening
🏢 The partial collapse of an Eastern Market building came as a shock to most of us, but was less surprising to some building tenants and people who are familiar with the century-old buildings in the area. Armond Harris, who owns Jabs Gym in the building located at 2501 Russell St., told BridgeDetroit he brought up structural issues to the landlord four months ago, and even spoke to the landlord again on Saturday before the collapse. A new report by Outlier, in collaboration with BridgeDetroit, found other buildings in the area with structural problems have resulted in two lawsuits and dozens of blight tickets. (Bridge Detroit, Outlier Media)
🚧 Business owners and tenants from the collapsed building have launched crowdfunding campaigns to help cope with the loss of property and merchandise and support their employees. Jabs Gym, J’adore Detroit and Detroit Vs. Everybody have all begun GoFundMe pages aiming to raise $150,000. (BridgeDetroit, Outlier Media, Detroit Free Press, GoFundMe)
🍺 It’s been a few months since Founders Brewing Co. announced the permanent closure of its Detroit location after a second racial discrimination lawsuit hit the taproom. A new, yet very familiar, brewery is expected to take over the Midtown space in 2024. Eastern Market Brewing Co. plans to open a new taproom named Elephant & Co. The brewery will serve doughnuts and coffee from Dooped Donuts and offer Detroit-style pizza in addition to having self service taps. (Metro Times)
